    Report from Day Three

    Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria

FreeFly-Slalom winners crowned in Gran Canaria

    • FreeFly-Slalom: 3 men’s & 7 women’s eliminations were completed.
    • Nia Suardiaz and Titouan Galea tool first place in the FreeFly-Slalom discipline.
    • Friday is all about Big Air action, where we plan to crown the first ever GWA Wingfoil Big Air World Champions 2023.

    MEN’S ELIMINATIONS 5-7

The third day of competition, with 35 men and 14 women battling for 8 hours, served up some of the most exciting FreeFly-Slalom ever seen, with the athletes amped by the cranking winds and swell for the challenging pump sections of the course.

France’s Titouan Galea was so dominant in the FreeFly-Slalom contest of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup in Gran Canaria, Spain, that he had the title in the bag even before the last race.

But Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo, who looked like a strong challenger for the crown earlier in the competition, had to battle to the end to take the second podium step, just ousting Alan Fedit (GER), who had shown remarkable consistency throughout.

“For sure when it’s 30, 35,40 knots it’s really cool to fight against everyone,” said Fedit. It’s really challenging. The pump track is super-long, so it’s really challenging. But if it’s nuclear conditions, it’ll be great to try the 2.8m2 wing. That would be really, really cool.” - Fedit said.

    WOMEN’S ELIMINATIONS 9-15

Nia Suardiaz never took her foot off the gas pushing to the end in every elimination. But Flora Artzner (FRA) performed much better on the second day of FreeFly-Slalom, making two bullets and the second podium step, just ahead of her French teammate, Orane Ceris.

“We had very tough conditions, I barely can feel my legs, but I’m very happy with my second place.” - Artzner said.

    Report from day One

    Sotavento, Fuerteventura

    Words: Ian MacKinnon

Surf-Freestyle battle has kicked off in Fuerteventura

    • The GWA Wingfoil World Tour made its debut at the historic 35th edition of Fuerteventura World Cup event, held at the legendary spot in Sotavento
    • Yesterday, we kicked off Day One with the Surf-Freestyle discipline
    • We completed Men’s round one to four and one round of the Women’s division

    MEN’S ROUND 1-4:

Twenty-eight men and 12 women from 14 nations battled in the opening rounds Surf-Freestyle discipline in gusty winds that varied from 24 to 35 knots. Most of the athletes were competing on their smaller wings of about 3m2.

Alan Fedit, was his usual irrepressible self on the water, advancing with one of the day’s bigger heat scores of 25.30. It included 8.60 for a Corkscrew Frontside 7 and 8.77 for a Back Flip-Frontside 3 Combo.

But once again it was Chris MacDonald who topped all-comers with the day’s biggest heat and trick scores. He romped away with 26.17 that included 8.87 for a Combo and 9.50 for the Frontside 10 that he is beginning to own.

“The conditions here [in Sotavento] are petty similar to Pozo,” said MacDonald, before the competition. “Let’s see what we can do. I mean this is definitely not an easy spot. The wind’s pretty shifty, but I think it’s going to be a good competition and the forecast looks good.”

    WOMEN’S ROUND 3

On the women’s side Nia Suardiaz made short work of rivals, while Orane Ceris (FRA) advanced easily, scoring an 8.0 for a Back Flip and 7.53 for a Combo. The Dutch rider Bowien van der Linden could not put such big numbers on the board, but still won her heat and progressed.

“We’ve had a couple of training days here and it went pretty well,” said Van der Linden, before the contest. “I landed my first Back Flip, so it couldn’t have gone better. In Pozo it was survival sometimes. But here you have little waves, so it’s a little like a skate ramp park.”

    Fuerteventura 2023

    FINAL EVENT WRAP-UP

    • Two disciplines within five days of competition were completed
    • Suardiaz won both FreeFly-Slalom & Surf-Freestyle divisions
    • Macdonald took the win in Surf-Freestyle and Galea fought hard to secure the top podium of the FreeFly-Slalom discipline

    [Blockierte Grafik: https://dim.mcusercontent.com/cs/b2422954e8ae0348331a37618/video_thumbnails_new/126adff96880800acb26f95ae66c4431.png?w=640&dpr=2]

The final day of the competition at the GWA Wingfoil World Cup in Fuerteventura saw the climactic finale of three days of FreeFly-Slalom action with the 40 men battling through nine elimination rounds on Sotavento’s turquoise waters, fuelled by 30 knots’ breezes.

France’s Titouan Galea clinched the title in the FreeFly-Slalom battles at the GWA Wingfoil World Cup in Fuerteventura, Spain, in a thrilling contest that went down to the wire on the final day. The veteran racer sealed the win in the very last race, just seeing off a stiff challenge from his closest rival, Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo, by the finest of margins. It gave Galea back-to-back FreeFly-Slalom crowns in the Canaries, a week after he landed the win in Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria.

The women’s FreeFly-Slalom had already been concluded on day four. After 15 elimination rounds, Spain’s Nia Suardiaz had proved almost unbeatable. The 16-year-old had won 13 of the rounds and had the title in the bag long before the finish. The young Spaniard was equally dominant as she grabbed the Surf-Freestyle crowns at both Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, where wingfoiling was making its debut as the historic event celebrated its 35th year.

The 35th edition of the Fuerteventura World Cup was also host to a piece of history. On consecutive Sundays, the US’s Chris MacDonald, 17, landed the Surf-Freestyle titles with unmatched riding that left rivals flailing.
