Lanzarote shines on the first day of the iQFOiL Games

Sharon Kantor and Nicolo Renna are the first leaders of the event organised by Marina Rubicón.

Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain), 11 December 2023

The first day of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games saw good racing conditions which in turn delivered some fantastic action. The final event of the 2023 season for the new Olympic class set to debut at Paris 2024 opened with a sunny day and wind of about 10 kts from the southeast, conditions that saw the Race Committee specify slalom format for both the men's and women's fleets. Sharon Kantor and Nicolo Renna are the first two leaders of the event organised by Marina Rubicón.

    Kantor, Wilson and Lamadrid

First to compete today were the 72 sailors who make up the women's fleet. Divided into blue and yellow groups for this first day of the qualifying series and with the first starting signal at 12h00 local time, the women’s fleet completed a total of four races which establish the first podium positions of the Lanzarote event.

Sharon Kantor was unbeatable on the race course, winning four from four races and taking the top spot with three points in her locker. Behind her, second place went to Britain's Emma Wilson with five points and two first places, a third and a disqualification for an early start that became her discard.

Spain's Pilar Lamadrid went from strength to strength on the opening day. After scoring a 27th place in the first race and a fifth in the second, Lamadrid finished with two race wins which see her on the third step of the provisional podium with a total of seven points, discarding the first race.

"The day went quite well. In the first heat, with the wind building and the southerly swell we had, I fell as soon as I got to the first buoy in second position, but the truth is that the other three races were a little better and I also felt better having re-tuned my equipment,” Lamadrid explained.

"In general, I am happy with the start of the event and let's hope that tomorrow, when we sail after the boys, we can do complete four more races," added the Spanish windsurfer.

Triple tie on the men's podium

After the four races in the women's fleet it was the turn of the 88 windsurfers competing in the men's division. The wind dropped towards the end of the afternoon but still allowed two races to be completed for each of the two groups and the overall results see a triple tie at the top.

Locked together each on four points and with a race win and a third place apiece, the Italian Nicolo Renna, the Frenchman Nicolas Goyard -third in the first event of the year held in Lanzarote last January- and the Dutchman Kiran Badloe are in first, second and third place respectively.

"The truth is that I felt very good today. This race serves as preparation for the world championship that we will also have here at the end of January, so we can see how the training is going this winter and where we are at the beginning of the season. We are strong and ready for this regatta and for the Worlds", pointed out Renna at the end of the day.

The Lanzarote iQFOiL Games continue tomorrow, Tuesday, with the second day of the qualifying series.

The event is organised by Marina Rubicón and has the collaboration of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation, as well as the institutional support of Promotur Turismo de Canarias, the Tourism Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote through the sports product European Sports Destination (managed by SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote), the Yaiza Town Hall and the private entities Dinghycoach, Naviera Armas and Cabrera Medina (Cicar).

Provisional Top 3. iQFOiL Women. Day 1.

    1. Sharon Kantor, (1)+1+1+1=3 points

    2. Emma Wilson, 1+3+(BFD/37)+1=5 points

    3. Pilar Lamadrid, (27)+5+1+1=7 points

    … 72 entries.

Provisional Top 3. iQFOiL Men. Day 1.

    1. Nicolo Renna, 3+1=4 points

    2. Nicolas Goyard, 1+3=4 points

    3. Kiran Badloe, 1+3=4 points

    … 88 entries.

Luuc Van Opzeeland, new male leader of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games. Kantor #1 for second day in a row in the women's fleet

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the Final Series begin

Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain), 12 December 2023

Lanzarote always delivers. Today, the second day of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games saw big waves and wind of about 10 knots which allowed five races for the men's class which is now led by the current world champion, the Dutchman Luuc Van Opzeeland, and four for the women, which continues to be dominated by Shanon Kantor.

Luuc Van Opzeelan takes the lead

With the aim of trying to make the most of the wind conditions forecast for the morning, the Race Committee brought the start forward to 10h30 local time. The first to compete were the yellow and blue fleets of the men's iQFOiL, and they did so by completing a total of five races in course racing format.

While yesterday ended in a three-way tie for the lead between Nicolo Renna (ITA), Nico Goyard (FRA) and Kiran Badloe (NED), the second day saw a shake-up in the overall standings with new athletes now occupying the top three places on the provisional podium.

With two firsts, a fourth, a second, and a seventeenth that becomes his discard, Dutchman Luuc Van Opzeeland, current world champion of the class, is the new leader of the overall with a total of 14 points and eight points ahead of the second place, Nacho Baltasar (ESP). The Spanish windsurfer had a great day on the waters of Lanzarote today with 4-1-3-6-5, results that allowed him to climb up ten positions in the table and being part of the fight for the last title of the season.

Behind him, third place goes to Joost Vink (NED) with 10-2-5-7-3. Vink is now six points behind Nacho.

Once on shore, Van Opzeeland said “it has been a very good day, we have done five races and for me they have been very good. In the last race the wind was a bit stronger and I got 17th, but it was still a good day and I'm ready to start the final series tomorrow."

    Sharon Kantor, more leader

The women's fleet added four more races today in which Sharon Kantor once again demonstrated her great potential on the race course. With two new partial victories and two third place finishes, Kantor holds on to the lead and closes the qualifying series with a four point lead over second placed Katy Spychakov, who today assaults second place with three wins, a second and a third.

Behind her, there was also a change in third place with Tamar Steinberg now in provisional bronze after three firsts, a fifth and a discarded eighth.

Britain's Emma Wilson, who was second yesterday and is now in fourth place one point off the podium, said that "we've had four very close races today and it's been very good. The level is very high because next year there is still a selection for the Olympic Games and everyone is pushing very hard."

"Lanzarote is a very nice place and we come here every year to train; these days there is very good wind and big waves, so this is definitely a fun place," she added.

Tomorrow Wednesday, the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games will celebrate the third of the five days of competition. It will also be the first round of the Final Series.

Provisional podium. iQFOiL Women. Day 1.

    1. Sharon Kantor, 1+1+1+1+1+(3)+2+(3)=7

The title deciding phase of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games started today with the first races of the Final Series

Sharon Kantor and Luuc Van Opzeeland still lead their divisions

With the first day of the Final Series completed, the Marathon race is scheduled for tomorrow with a course that will take the fleet to the island of Lobos passing Punta del Papagayo.

Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain) 13 December 2023

The first day of the final series at the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games saw the wind already blowing at more than 15 knots in the early in the morning and so the 160 windsurfers competing in the last big event of the year enjoyed the best conditions yet on the race course which was laid right in front of Marina Rubicón. And now with the fleet already divided into the gold and silver groups, the respective leaders are still Sharon Kantor and Luuc Van Opzeeland.

Double tie at the top of the women’s fleet

At the end of the first day of the final series the results are very close. The added pressure to secure a place in the top ten meant that practically the whole fleet jumped the start gun. And so the race officers had to recall and try again several times.

The women's fleet notched up a total of four races. Sharon Kantor who has led since the first day of the event still maintains her dominance, recording a 1-5-4-17 (the 17th being her discard), even if now she is tied on points with second placed Katy Spychakov, who discards the 23rd place she scored in the first race of the day and adds a second, a third and a first.

"I felt in the water in the first heat but in the next one I was able to take advantage. I started the championship very well so now I'm trying to stay up there," said Kantor.

In third place, Britain's Emma Wilson is only five points behind Kantor and Spychakov thanks to her consistency, with three seconds and a fifth place today promoting her back onto the podium.

It was a great day also for Pilar Lamadrid. The Spanish windsurfer opened the final series of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games with two race victories and two sixth places -she discards one of them-, now leaving her in fifth position, 11 points away from the podium positions.

"I managed to take two of the four races. We had a very stable wind of 15-16 knots, which is perfect for sailing and racing. I am very happy to find myself a bit better again and being able to fight at the top of the fleet; the main goal now is to get into the Medal Series," said Lamadrid.

Luuc Van Opzeeland holds on to first, too

The men's fleet completed five races today, with the flying Dutchman Luuc Van Opzeeland still maintaining a comfortable lead.

Winning two races today he added a third, a sixth and a ninth that he discards, Van Opzeeland opens the Final Series with a 17-points advantage over the second-placed Italian Nicolo Renna, who won two races today and is in second overall. Nico Goyard (FRA) is third now, 23 points behind the Italian.

Nacho Baltasar (ESP), who was second yesterday, broke his board after a collision today and he was unable to compete in the second race of the day. Despite this he was able to finish the day and stay in the fight for the title in the fifth position.

"After the collision I had to come to the marina to change boards and I missed that race, but I was able to get out quickly and arrived just in time for the next one, which was the best of the day for me with a third place. In general, the feeling with respect to the fleet –that’s very strong- is very good. I felt very comfortable. Now it's time to keep pushing because it's been a very tough championship," said the Spaniard.

Tomorrow will be the fourth day of competition, and the iQFOiLs will compete the Marathon race, which will score double points and will have a course that will take the 160 participants to the island of Lobos passing through Punta del Papagayo. The weather forecast predicts +20 knots NE winds.

The Lanzarote iQFOiL Games titles set to be decided tomorrow

Winds of between 15 and 20 knots and waves of more than two metres marked the fourth day of competition for the 160 Olympic windsurfers who contested an intense Marathon race between the islands of Lanzarote and Lobos and two course races.

Tomorrow's Medal Series for the top ten in the gold groups are set to decide the winners of the event. The championship leaders, Sharon Kantor and Luuc Van Opzeeland, go directly to the Final.

Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain), 14 December 2023

Perfect conditions with strong winds of between 15 and 20 knots and more than two metres of waves proved a great challenge for today’s Marathon race at the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games. The penultimate day of the championship saw the Olympic windsurfing fleet compete in a demanding course of just less than one hour's duration between Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos passing the Punta del Papagayo. It was a fast and furious contest that again saw Sharon Kantor and Luuc Van Opzeeland prove fastest.

The Marathon, which counts as the points equivalent of two race course races, and the last two races of the Final Series decided the top ten windsurfers which will go forwards to the Medal Series. The leaders, Luuc Van Opzeeland and Sharon Kantor, go directly to the Grand Final.

Flying Dutchman Luuc Van Opzeeland, unbeatable

The standout event leader Luuc Van Opzeeland also proved unbeatable in the Marathon. With an elapsed time of 49 minutes from the starting signal until he crossed the finish line, the Dutchman claimed the best points from the marathon which offers the equivalent to two races in the overall standing.

Then in the afternoon’s two course races Van Opzeeland retired from the first one - which is his last discard – but bounced back for a second place in the other one. So as series leader he will go straight into tomorrow's Final.

Behind him, the second and third placed pair. Frenchman Nicolas Goyard -second in the Marathon- and the Italian Nicolo Renna, go to the Semifinal. The next seven sailors compete in the Medal Series from the quarterfinals.

Sharon Kantor regains the solo lead after the Marathon

Sharon Kantor proved unstoppable in the women’s marathon. Her victory meant she went into today's last two races of the Final Series with an advantage.

"I started the race really well, I got third at the first buoy and took the lead on the downwind leg. It was a really tough race but I managed to stay on the foil without falling off and I was able to keep my position, so I'm very happy," said Kantor after crossing the finish line after a 55-minute course.

The strong wind and waves of the morning gave way to a more unstable wind in the afternoon, complicating the last race of the day in which only ten sailors managed to cross the finish line.

Kantor goes directly to the Final in the first position while Katy Spychakov and the British Emma Wilson, second and third classified, will start in the Semifinals.

    Tomorrow, final day

Everything is decided in the Grand Final. The Medal Series comprises quarterfinals and semifinals leading into a Grand Final. The two top ranked riders today Luuc Van Opzeeland and Sharon Kantor- go straight into the Grand Final which decides the winners of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held at 17:00 local time at the Oasis Marina Bay.

Lanzarote closes the iQFOiL season on a high note

Sharon Kantor and current world champion Luuc Van Opzeeland win the event, a great warm-up for the World Championship which will be held in January as part of the Lanzarote International Regatta.

Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain), 15 December 2023

The Lanzarote iQFOiL Games finished on a high note in perfect conditions. Winds of between 12 and 15 knots blew for the Medal Series which featured the ten best male and female windsurfers to decide the titles. And the championship honours went to Sharon Kantor and the current world champion of the class, the Dutchman Luuc Van Opzeeland.

The event which is an important regatta on the Olympic windsurfing circuit was organised by Marina Rubicón for the second time this season. Just as the first event in January was a great success, so too was this one, once again highlighting the unique potential as it delivers great conditions and an excellent infrastructure.

The week has seen perfect conditions of wind, sun and waves and the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games has delivered contests across all disciplines - slalom, race course and a demanding marathon in a unique environment between the islands of Lanzarote and Lobos.

Luuc Van Opzeeland, winner of the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games.

After the quarter-finals and a semi-final in which the second and third overall placed Frenchman Nicolas Goyard and the Italian Nicolo Renna were eliminated, the Grand Final pitted the leader Luuc Van Opzeeland, Brit Finn Hawkins and the Dane Johan Søe.

The flying Dutchman who has led since the second day of the championship dominated the final showdown. He took the lead at the first buoy and held off his rivals to win ahead of Hawkins, who was second, and Søe who took third place and won the U21 category.

"It was an amazing day," said the Dutchman. "The last day is always tricky, today I pushed a lot, I had a great start and then an amazing layline. I was up there and then I just brought it home. It's been a good week with good waves during the week."

    Unbeatable Sharon Kantor wins

There were no surprises in the women's division of iQFOiL. Of the three sailors who reached the Medal Series Britain's Emma Wilson was unable to fight for the medals after finishing fourth in the semi-final.

So, leader Sharon Kantor, who went straight through to the Grand Final was up against Tamar Steinberg and Katy Spychakov, who started the day from the quarter-finals and semi-final respectively, battled it out in a thrilling three-way duel.

Kantor once again gave her best and sealed the Canary Islands event with a final partial victory, a result that made her the new winner with a total of nine victories and another three podiums in the 16 events that took place.

Kantor, who never dropped out of first place in the overall standings since the first day of the championship, said after returning to land "I felt very good, the conditions were very good and the Final was very interesting. I am very happy to have won. My plan now is to stay a few days and then come back to prepare for the World Championship, which I'm really looking forward to."

Sharon Kantor and Tamar Steinberg also won first and second place in the U21 category.

The prize-giving ceremony, which took place at 17h00 local time, was attended by Juan Monzón, Sports Councillor of the Cabildo Insular de Lanzarote; Ángel Lago, Sports Councillor of Yaiza Town Council, and Daniel Medina, Tourism Councillor; María Martín on behalf of Lanzarote Tourism; Rafael Bonilla, President of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation; and Rafael Lasso, CEO of Marina Rubicón.

The action continues at the Lanzarote Sailing Center

With the Lanzarote iQFOiL Games over, Marina Rubicón is already preparing for its next two big events, the iQFOiL Worlds at the end of January and the 49er and 49erFX in March, both of which are part of the Lanzarote International Regatta. Until then, the Olympic activity continues relentlessly at the Lanzarote Sailing Center, where a large group of teams and crews from different countries around the world have set their training base for Paris 2024.

This event was organised by Marina Rubicón with the collaboration of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation, as well as the institutional support of Promotur Turismo de Canarias, the Tourism Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote through the sports product European Sports Destination (managed by SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote), the Yaiza Town Hall and the private entities Dinghycoach, Naviera Armas and Cabrera Medina (Cicar).
